Home Security - Do It Yourself Options

A home security system can provide some extra protection for your home and your family, not to mention some piece of mind. However a good home alarm system can be expensive and many homeowners opt do go the do it yourself route when it comes to security for there home.

There are some things you can do to make your home more secure without having an alarm system installed. A thief is always going to look for the easiest target so it just makes sense to make your house less of a target.

Here are some things you can do to make your house less appealing to a would be burglar. Trim back trees and large shrubs from your house. Large bushes right next to your house give a thief cover so they can remain undetected. Install some lights around your house that are triggered by a motion detector. A thief will usually want to remain undetected and they wouldn’t want to be seen when the lights go on. You could install some cameras around your house for video surveillance. Good quality locks on doors and windows could make it more difficult for a thief to get in.

Implementing all of the above tips would be a good idea but you may still want to put in an alarm system as well. If you’re considering putting in an alarm system and you want to do it yourself there are some things you need to take into consideration. You’ll want to cover as many points of entry as your budget allows. You wouldn’t want to just alarm the front door and allow easy access from a side or back door or window. You’ll also need to think about the hardware you’ll need for your house. There are sensors that are triggered when a door or window opens. There are sensors that detect breaking glass. There are motion detectors. The list goes on. You’ll need to do your homework to figure out what you need for your particular situation.

If you do choose to install your own security alarm you’ll probably want to go wireless. A wireless system is immensely easier to install and doesn’t require you to tear up your walls or fish wires through them. No crawling around the attic or crawl space, or any of the other hassles of electrical work. Wireless do it yourself type systems are usually less expensive too.

You’ll also want to consider a monitoring service. Monitoring will cost you around $25 to $40 per month but without monitoring an alarm system is just a noise maker and you may not be able to rely on your neighbors to call the police if the alarm goes off. A monitoring service will call the police automatically and have the police there in just a few minutes.

Whatever you decide to do, you should do something to improve home security whenever possible. A thief will always look for the easiest target so make sure that target isn’t you.
