If you've ever been the victim of a crime or know somebody who has then you'll understand the feelings of fear and anger that go along with that. An effective way to fight crime and feel safer in your own neighborhood is to organize a neighborhood watch program. This article is meant to give you some neighborhood watch tips such as how to go about starting a neighborhood watch program and knowing what's involved with the participating in such a program.
A neighborhood watch program is simply a number of households in the community that are organized, stay in touch with each other and the local authorities, and
are observant and know what to look for in terms of suspicious activity in the neighborhood. The members of a neighborhood watch program are not meant to be security guards. If you see someone committing a crime you are not expected to "apprehend a suspect". You would be expected to call the police.
To start a neighborhood watch program in your neighborhood, you would first want to talk to some of your neighbors and determine the level of interest for this type of program in your neighborhood. It's enough people in your neighborhood are interested you would then call your local police department or sheriffs office to inquire about their procedures for starting this type of program. In most communities your local police department or sheriffs office would provide guidance and the materials needed to get started.
Neighborhood watch programs can be very effective in reducing the crime rate of a neighborhood. The members of the neighborhood watch would receive education on various home security measures and how to recognize suspicious activity. Whenever a member of the neighborhood watch observes some type of suspicious activity they would call the police to report it immediately. The group would also be issued some neighborhood watch signs alerting and he would be criminals that this neighborhood always have someone watching and ready to call the authorities. If the criminals know that there is an effective neighborhood watch program in your neighborhood they will move on to find another neighborhood that may be an easier target.
